The Walking Dead, begun
Dear Amazon.com recommendations engine,
Yes, I admit that I bought Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead vols. 1-4, a series of zombie-themed graphic novels. But no, that doesn’t mean that I am a lover of zombie fiction. In fact, I don’t like zombies at all; I find them tedious and uninteresting. The thing is, though, these aren’t zombie novels in the usual horror genre sense — they’re apocalypse books where zombies happen to be the particular vector of the apocalypse. And as apocalypse books go, they’re pretty good — not genre-transcendingly great, but definitely worth reading for people who like apocalypse-themed comics.
Anyway, though, knock it off with the zombie recommendations. Thanks.

Certain obligations force me to claim that most zombie fiction that’s any good at all uses the zombies only as backdrop for whatever message / theme is being expressed by the author. Because, just as you say: zombies by themselves are tedious and boring.
