All About My Mother
My theory is that people saying things in foreign languages sound more high-brow and cultured than people saying them in English, which explains why critics were so hepped up about this thoroughly average movie. Ridiculously over-the-top characters and situations (transvestite prostitutes, pregnant nuns, etc.) combine in a rambling plot that seems to have little point other than to put people in wrenching situations and see them cry and/or be brave ‘n’ shit.
It’s not bad — the cinematography is very nice, and it’s all European and cosmopolitan and shit — but it’s really nothing special. Very overrated.
