The Golden Compass
So everyone said this was all terrible, but it wasn’t really terrible. All the effects were fine, the acting ranged from decent to Sam Elliott, and each individual scene was fine enough. The problem, really, is that they were doing one of those hyper-literal adaptations, where they try to cram every scene from the book in there without thought to how it flows as a movie, like in the first Harry Potter film.
Watching this in the same day as the Narnia movie is interesting, because the Narnia one is clearly the better-crafted movie from a structure and pace perspective, but if you get past that, the story of this one is far more interesting, plus it’s less hideously offensive.
