So it seemed like there was a ton of hype for this and then when it was released it all fizzled out and it was kind of meh-reviewed. Either I’m misremembering or everyone is insane, because this is a superb movie.

It’s Godzilla reimagined without all the Roland Emmerich cinematic bullshit[1]. It’s structurally like John M. Ford’s Growing Up Weightless in that the PLOT is happening off in the background and only tangentially involving our characters, who are just running through it, it’s visually like the Blair Witch, and it’s emotionally the raw shock-addled experience of a disaster in progress. Absolutely revelatory and brilliant. Unless you’re prone to movie-induced motion sickness, you really ought to see this.
