So this turned out to be a Criterion Collection disc, and I don’t really get what their thing is these days – I always thought they were the company that people would license to make laserdiscs or actually high-quality DVD versions when they couldn’t be bothered to, but who needs a company like that when everyone can put out a superb Blu-ray release without half trying?

Well, either way, from a technical A/V production perspective, Benjamin Button was astonishingly well done, among the best movies I’ve ever seen. So maybe those Criterion guys are pretty good at making definitive versions of movies, I dunno!

As for the movie itself, I found it surprisingly good. Reviews seem mixed between people who found it really excellent and people who found it cheap and manipulative. And I can certainly see that, because if you don’t buy into it, it’s just pure melodrama with famous actors in age makeup. But if you do buy it – and I did – then it’s pretty damn affecting, and features great actors (Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton) in an epic story spanning decades.
