So I’d seen this movie before, but Anne hadn’t, and we have it on Blu-ray, so we watched it yesterday. After carefully considering which edition we wanted to see (the thing comes with the theatrical, international theatrical, director’s cut, and “final cut” versions), we settled on the Final Cut, which the internets recommend.

This is very clearly one of those movies that benefits greatly from Blu-ray, and it looks great on Blu-ray. It also benefits from the passage of time – it probably looked really futuristic in 1982 or whatever, and then from 1987-1998 it probably looked deeply silly and outdated, but now in 2009 it looks utterly charming, with a sort of deliberate ‘80s-cyberpunk aesthetic. So, yay for watching it in basically the perfect way!
