So I have been resolved to watch, like, foreign films and shit. So, here we are, a French-ass movie! Which, weirdly, has Jodie Foster in it, which confused the hell out of me, because I am all, “That is Jodie Foster! No wait, it can’t be her, because this is a French movie and she is speaking French,” but credits confirm that it is, so apparently she is bilingual? Fancy!

Anyway, as for the movie itself, it was kind of fascinating. The premise is that Audrey Tattoo lost her fiancé in a particular battle in WWI, but she refuses to believe he’s dead, and tries to find out exactly what happened. So she ends up talking to other people who were involved in this battle or related situations in various ways, and they all get their stories told. This almost comes off as a series of unrelated vignettes wrapped in a framing story; but each of the other people’s stories also ends up giving Audrey a new piece of information for her mystery, so it’s more cohesive than that. The best analogy I have, I think, is Hyperion, but not really.

It works well, at any rate, and is a neat structure. Visually, the movie is absolutely gorgeous, even on Netflix streaming. It does seem to have been color-timed to make it look like every shot was taking place near sunset, all golden-hued, but what the hell, it’s a period piece in France, it works. Recommended!
