So, like the comics, this is a triumph of style over substance, as the movie is faithful to the comics in featuring shallowly drawn characters who act in ridiculously implausible ways for the whimsical demands of the plot.

But unlike the comics, the style actually kinda works here – thanks to the magic of actual actors, you can tell the characters apart consistently throughout the thing, and the little 8-bit videogame touches seem less pathetically fanboyish when they’re a nifty visual style in a movie than when they’re in a comic book.

I can’t say I’d actually recommend the movie – it is, as I say, still lacking in characters that have any character – but it’s a pleasant enough diversion, I suppose.
