So this is one of those movies that EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD saw back when it came out in the mid-’90s, right? And I spent most of college hearing catchphrases from it.

But somehow I didn’t see it until now, and holy cow has it turned into a period piece. Remember that whole swing revival thing from the ’90s? That really happened! I always forget about that existing in between the alt-rock grunge dominant period and the Latin pop boom, but yeah, that was a whole big thing. Also an interesting thing about ‘90s period pieces is that the people are obviously wearing clothes and hairstyles of that era, but they don’t look super-stupid and silly. I can’t decide if this is just a formative-years taste thing, or a reflection of the fact that ‘90s-era fashion was objectively better than that of previous decades.

Anyway, good movie. It’s obviously suffused to its core with that peculiar objectification of women thing — it’s basically a movie where the whole cast is Barney Stinson — but if you just accept that as a genre trope and move on, it’s pretty fun. Snappy dialogue, good actors, and some light fun times.
