So this was in the “indie foreign classics” category as I was browsing Netflix streaming, and I turned it on.

You know what it is, right? The Hitler movie?

So on the one hand, it’s like really well-made visually, especially given the context of the time and all. The part where it opens in an airplane, with swoopy cloud shots must have just been incredible back then, before most people had ever been near an airplane and there was no CGI or indeed C.

On the other hand, I think this movie has probably suffered more from unintended tonal shift than any other movie. All the shots of super-clean-cut German yutes doing the HEIL HITLER gesture while indeed actually SAYING “Heil Hitler!” are… pretty fucking ominous/creepy. I think they were meant to be inspiring/patriotic? So yeah, it is now a chilling horror film. Also, Hitler does a pretty good “shouty Hitler” imitation, but the dude from Inglourious Basterds was better.

On the third hand, there is like zero dramatic tension or narrative drive in the movie, so I turned it off after like 30 minutes or whatever and will never finish it. What the fuck does it go on about for a full 1:45?
