The Kids Are All Right
So this is Yet Another Crumbling Relationship Movie, but with the twist that the couple in question is defying the Lord’s will by engaging in the forbidden love between two women, plus ALSO they have kids and the kids start up contact with their sperm-donor father, who turns out to be Mark Buffalo, and complications ensue from THAT.
This sort of movie lives and dies based on the script and the acting, and both are good here. The kids are believably kid-like (particularly the sullen, uncommunicative, random-question-out-of-nowhere boy), Annette Bening and Julianne Moore do a great job as an old married couple having a hard time remembering the non-inertial reasons why they’re an old married couple, and even Mark Buffalo mostly gets to be this sort of hippie-rogue dude who is less annoying than Mark Buffalo characters usually are. Recommended.
