Oh, that was a good one. It started off as one of those slightly icky period pieces, treating wife-beating and alcoholism as jokes; but it turned out to go in a rather different direction — The characters are all deeply flawed, and the movie makes you love them for it. It’s an unusually savage romantic comedy, and its characters unusually not airbrushed. It’s surprising to see a movie that’s enjoyable as fluff, but seems like more than that.

Also, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart are pretty good. I bet those kids will make a name for themselves someday!
