Star Trek 1: The Motion Picture: The One From the 70s
So I haven’t seen this movie for a long time, and watched it on a whim on Netflix. Things:
-
I know some people don’t like it, but I don’t really know why. Is it the pacing? Because yes, the pacing is glacial, but I just chalk that up to how old SF movies used to be, and plus also I chalk it up to Star Trek being Star Trek. Trek shouldn’t be fast-cut boom-boom actionpants bullshit, I’M TALKING TO YOU JJ ABRAMS.
-
I never remember that they use the TNG theme on this movie (or more chronologically accurately, that TNG uses the ST:TMP theme, I guess). It seems weird to hear awesome modern Trek music and then see the legacy crew.
-
So you know how the original TV show had all the ladies in miniskirts? I feel like this movie was an attempt at specific restitution there, because all the women had pants, and all the dudes had these super-awkward onesies that basically provided a smooth front to be disrupted by their groinal regions. GET A TUNIC, DUDES.

So I was wondering how old Nimoy and Shatner were, because Nimoy looks about 20 years older than Shatner in this movie, and: they are the same age! They were both born in 1931 (so are today in their eighties), and were 48 or so when this movie was made. Nimoy looks like he’s well into his fifties; I’d buy Shatner at late thirties.
