Ant-Man! So, this movie is going to be a totes flop if our theatre was any guide. Practically empty on a Friday night.

Things I thought:

  1. Overall, it was… okay. It wasn’t bad — better than Iron Man 2 or Thor 2, for sure — and the concept of Ant-Man works well, and the Pym/Lang relationship mostly works, but the sparkle was missing, and it never rose above “decent enough.”

  2. Hiring Edgar Wright was a mistake. Because there were some humor lines that came off really weird and if I think about Simon Pegg saying them, it’s totally natural and works, but with Paul Rudd, not so much. Wright was the wrong guy for this film, and they should have ripped out more of his stuff. The troubled development history was definitely visible onscreen.

  3. To my mind, the best part of the movie was its integration into the Marvel Universe. When it was just the Ant-Folk, it was fine, but it really got interesting when Marvel-related people showed up. More of that!

  4. Weird thing: A lot of the lines from trailers weren’t actually in the movie. Like, at all. And the really odd thing is, they were little punchline things, too, so that the ads made it seem more humorous than it actually was.

  5. Also 3D on Ant-Man was WEIRD. It looked CGish, like they carefully 3D modeled each object in each scene, but to do it in that level of detail would have been expensive, surely. But it seemed a bit too precise to be real 3D. So I don’t know.
