Terrible movie, just lousy. First of all, of course, it’s pure formula. Teenage girl has bad thing happen, wishes to be older, magic dust, older, confused, happy, realizes that she’s forgotten what’s really important and become a shallow materialistic person who’s lost the only person who ever mattered to her, cries, magic dust, teenager, now with perspective.

But even accounting for that, it’s just bad. You can make good formula movies (Mean Girls was almost pure formula, too), but this one doesn’t. The writing is pedestrian, the characters are stupid, Mark Ruffalo (whose name I’ve heard a zillion times, usually with “heart-throb” attached to it) is a complete doof, and the moral core underpinning the movie is the thoroughly reprehensible sentiment that you should marry the person you’re in love with at 13 and then move into a GIANT PINK HOUSE (literally) like the Barbie dream house you had when you were 13.

Repulsive. Avoid.
