Spy
Oh yeah, we watched this over the weekend. It’s the Melissa McCarthy one that looked super-horrible from the trailers. We watched it because we wanted a comedy, and on the principle of “need to have something better before rejecting existing choice”, which ensures that you end up watching something, this carried the day. Neither of us expected much from it.
But it’s actually pretty decent! Like, it kinda reminds me of that Kingsman movie? There was only one ostentatious gross-out humor scene with elaborate vomit in it, which is one more than is needed; but beyond that, it was largely okay.
The biggest thing is that whereas the trailers made it seem like Melissa McCarthy is thrown into being a spy but she sucks at it lol watch her bumble, the real movie is actually that she’s super-competent at spy shit but everyone keeps underestimating her, so it’s watching somebody mostly do a really good job despite institutional obstacles placed in her way, which is vastly more entertaining than watching someone keep failing.
Not great or anything, but better than terrible, which is good for a comedy.
