Dunkirk
Okay, this might actually win the “overrated” prize, because I read all sorts of things about how this was this brilliant war movie, and… idgi.
It’s basically just a two-hour action scene. The tension starts in minute one, and it never lets up, but the thing is, you can’t really keep unrelieved tension going for that long, so in effect it just has a very flat tone, with no peaks or valleys. Without any quiet moments of contemplation, the tense moments when you might die don’t really seem that compelling.
Caveat to the above is that I didn’t watch the last 20 minutes. But also, I turned a movie off with 20 minutes left in it, and didn’t care, so.
