Climax
So this is a movie about a troupe of dancers whose punch is spiked with LSD, and then there’s a descent into drugs and madness.
I’ve heard a lot about it for one reason or another, and it’s only 90 minutes, so I figured it’d be a nice light thing to watch. This turned out to not exactly be true, depending on how you feel about people being viciously attacked, set on fire, slashed with knives, electrocuted, and all sorts of other unpleasantnesses.
But: It is true that the movie is loaded with style. It’s basically got a continuous dance music soundtrack going throughout, the early choreography is mesmerizing, and then the core part of the movie is filmed in a single 40+ minute continuous shot. The combination of the camera being in continuous motion, this continuous backdrop of dance music, and interesting lighting creates an experience that’s… I don’t know if “surreal” is quite the right word, but it’s immersive and unrelenting and definitely off-kilter. I feel like if you saw this in a theater, you’d be in a really weird place as you were leaving.
This is an unpleasant movie in a whole bunch of ways, but no question it’s exceedingly well done, and I’d actually recommend it with the obvious caveat that it needs more content warnings than there are words in this write-up.
