So we had the good fortune of watching this after all the disappointed takes flowed in, and therefore had our expectations super-lowered, to the point where I feel like it’s a contrarian hot take that… it was basically okay?

Does the plot have holes? Oh yeah, all over the place. Is it kind of a sprawling mess? Sure enough! Does it deliberately and loudly set the movie in 1984 and then mostly ignore that it’s 1984 except for like two jokey scenes? Yep!

But… I don’t know, it had a coherent theme to it, the major character beats mostly worked, and it was basically inoffensive. It’s not a great movie, and if you were putting it up against Marvel movies, it’d probably be down near the bottom, ahead of like Thor 2 and a couple of other mediocrities. But that’s still enough to make it one of the best DC movies.

Yeah, it doesn’t live up to the first Wonder Woman, which was a lot less sloppy than this, and if I’d woken up early on Christmas to rush to watch it, it’d’ve felt anticlimactic and disappointing, but I didn’t, and so it didn’t. Recommended if you’re interested in just-above-mediocre superhero movies.
