We watched this on the tripartite basis of a) Steven Soderbergh has made good movies, b) this cast is fucking lit, just nonstop star power in every role, and c) hey, Detroit!

So it turns out to be one of those Coen-like movies where some crime dudes get up to some crime shit, except then they get double-crossed, but then their double-crosser gets double-crossed, except then that person gets double-crossed, but then the whole thing was—

Well, honestly, any more detail than that would probably be a spoiler. But yeah, this is one of those movies where you spend a lot of time figuring out who has what when, who’s getting paid by whom, and what everyone’s motives are. I think it all holds together, and there’s even a big-picture theme underlying the whole thing that makes it more than just a random macguffin hunt.

The main negative, really, is that for some reason Soderbergh decided to film most of it with a fisheye lens, and it’s really obtrusive and there’s no real clear reason for it. It just feels like this random piece of artifice in a movie that didn’t need it.

It’s not brilliant, but it’s good. Think of it as kind of a lower-key, somewhat less funny take on the Ocean’s series. Recommended.
