Freaky
The premise of this movie is: What if a teenage girl freaky fridayed a jason? Which is actually a great premise, and tbh, I would be here for freakies becoming a subgenre of film in the way that groundhog days (or as I guess they say now “time loop movies”) have.
There aren’t a lot of surprises here, really. Like, every note that you think this movie is going to hit, it hits. But another way to put that is: The movie knows what notes it needs to hit, and it gets the job done.
Does having another perspective give the protagonist insight into the lives of those close to her? It does. Does it help drive several emotional catharses? Sure enough. Do her tormenters get revenged in a way that is intended to be satisfying while also letting the protagonist and the audience keep their hands clean by having that vengeance actually be the fault of a serial killer who we know is a bad guy? Yeppers!
It’s all well done, with Kathryn Newton (who is apparently Cassie Lang in the upcoming Ant-Man 3) doing great physical acting, with perfect body language for a jason, and Vince Vaughn having fun acting as a teenage girl. Really, just a charming little comedy slasher that leans heavier toward the comedy than the slashing (but definitely has elements of both). Recommended for anyone looking for some light fluff who’s not sensitive to blood and gore.
