Glass Onion
In retrospect, I’m glad that The Last Jedi became a flashpoint of controversy, because if it had been purely successful, then Rian Johnson would be wasting his time making Star Wars movies instead of making this mystery comedy sequel.
So this is a completely different movie from Knives Out, with only Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in common. Here, the idea is that a rich guy invites a handful of his friends to a fancy murder mystery party on a private island, and it’d be a spoiler to say what happens from there, but if you’re getting Clue vibes, you’re not wrong (although don’t get Blanc started on Clue).
This is maybe the funniest movie I’ve seen in… years? Like, Everything Everywhere is arguably as funny in places, but this one is spending more time in a directly comic register. The dialogue is sharp as hell, the characters and their mannerisms are perfect (having an A+ all-star cast sure doesn’t hurt), the setting… it all just works to come together into something that absolutely filled me with glee. So great.
And then of course it’s also a murder mystery, and the mystery is sufficiently intricate with a couple of big twists. And I don’t want to spoil it, but man, there is some real ripped-from-the-headlines energy to this movie. I will be shocked if I don’t see some Glass Onion memes soon.
Flatly excellent. It’s on Netflix, so you can watch it for free. Do it.
