One of the things that pissed me off, back in the day, was that the DVD for 2001 was really really horrible. It wasn’t even anamorphic (which means that it won’t display in the right aspect ratio on a modern television without putting the TV into a stupid mode that throws away half the resolution), and it was just generally poorly done. I mean, okay, it’s better than the VHS version that I first saw it on, but that’s not saying a whole lot.

So as I’m flipping through the channels tonight, I see on HDNet Movies… 2001! In HD! And I watch it for a bit, and wow. I am forced to believe that I’ve never actually seen this movie before, because this is really like a whole different film. For some movies, going from really shitty NTSC to excellent HD just makes them prettier; Big Momma’s House in HD isn’t appreciably different from Big Momma’s House with your eyes gouged out with a spork.

But for a movie that’s 98% visual, it sort of matters a lot if you can, e.g., SEE THE PICTURE CLEARLY.

So anyway, yeah, if you’ve got HDNet and an HDTV, you should totally TiVo this. I think it’s on like a zillion more times.
