So recently, I was talking about how movie reviewers are full of shit when they say plots are incomprehensible and don’t make sense.

Exhibit B, motherfuckers.

This movie got panned widely, with many of the negative reviews focusing on the plot not making sense. Only, the problem is, it absolutely does. Oh, it probably has the usual plotholes, of the “Well, doing Y instead of X would have been much smarter and resulted in a better outcome” variety, but in terms of pure causal relationships, everything in the movie is fine. If X, then Y, therefore Z. You just have to take the movie’s premises (which rely on a sort of literal pseudo-Catholicism) and let it go from there.

Anyway, that aside, this was a pretty good movie. It fell into Hollywood cliche moments about a half dozen times, but apart from those, it was solidly its own thing. I’ve never read the comics this is based on, but I can see the echoes of them in the movie (with, I’m sure, enough distortion to drive comic fans mad).

If you like stylish supernatural thrillers in glorious 1080p, recommended.
