So this is nominally a high school sex comedy, though like most modern movies, it’s essentially sexless in practice. The premise is that these two lesbian friends start a “self defense club” for girls at their school so that they can hook up with the popular girls that they have the hots for, and find it unexpectedly sorta working.

Tonally, the movie flirts with a kind of realism at points, but mostly spends its time in this extremely turned-to-11 register, where everything is heightened to the point of absurdity. I don’t think the director quite keeps enough control on this — it’s unclear sometimes whether something is supposed to be parodical, taken seriously, or what; and some elements veer between those poles in ways that are more than a little messy. (Marshawn Lynch’s teacher character is probably the biggest example of this; he’s played as an outright joke, but then seems to actually be a real character whose emotions we care about… but then is back to being a cartoon again.)

I always hate it when reviewers say of gonzo maximalist movies that they should have taken it back a notch, but I kinda feel that way here. Still, there’s a lot here that does work, and it manages to be genuinely funny without being too embarrassment-cringey, so if you’re in the mood for a comedy, you could do worse.
