Whale Rider
I am motherfucking DONE with indie films, because every single one of them is the exact same movie. There’s some family whose traditional culture is being erased by modernity, and the paterfamilias is all trying to preserve it, and the younger generation is trying to do their thing, and there’s all this conflict, and in the end the high-spirited youngster wins over the crotchety oldster. And so it is in Whale Rider, where the traditional culture is some Maori tribe thing, and the youngster is a spirited little girl. Basically, this is Bend It Like Beckham in New Zealand.
Not a bad movie or anything, but you’ve seen it before.
