So my ongoing accidental project of watching and reconsidering ’90s movies continues — except this time, it’s a movie I never saw. (I was never a fan of movies about sordid losers, part of the reason I didn’t enjoy Jackie Brown back when, and so pretty much just avoided this.)

Watching it now, it’s so clearly a ’90s movie. Some of this is the hyper-kinetic style; some of it is the arch, knowing narration; and some of it is that it’s about heroin and AIDS, which are very twencen crises, cinematically speaking.

As an old person now who misses the nineties, I’m here for the nostalgia hit; but I also think I was right to give this a miss back then. Not because it’s a bad movie — it isn’t, it’s solidly decent — but because it is about losers and it is unbelievably sordid. The toilet scene is imprinted in my brain now, and is deeply horrifying. I would have super-hated this back then, in a way that I don’t now.
