The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive; The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave
Two more gialli, both of them solid movies with plots full of twists and surprises.
The first is The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive, and it involves a self-scourging priest who is having multiple affairs before he is murdered. Was it one of the women? Was it one of their husbands? A police inspector follows a bunch of clues, and eventually we find out the answer — but not before there’s a scene of a bunch of topless nuns also scourging themselves. This one notably plays very fair with its mystery, and the eventual reveal makes total sense.
The second is The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave. This is one of those movies that just starts you off with a bunch of context-free scenes, and figuring out what’s happening is kinda the whole point of the movie, so I won’t bother explaining it. But I will say that after a lot of twists and turns, there are perhaps 1-2 too many at the very end of the movie, and I’m not sure the nested reveals all make total sense if you think about them. It also leaves a number of mysteries unsolved, and appears to have either forgotten about or totally forgiven at least one murder of a prostitute.
Neither of these is great, and so I can’t recommend them to anyone who doesn’t already love this absurd genre, but they’re both solidly above average, and deliver what a giallo should.
