Saved
Saved is the story of a girl who goes to a super-Christian high school, and is all religious ‘n’ what-not, and then gets pregnant.
It’s a very good movie. All the stuff I wrote about how 13 Going on 30 sucked applies in inverse here — it’s not formulaic, the characters are actual people rather than animated plot points, it’s in general sharply observational, and the underlying moral framework is one that, while not mine, is basically sound.
It’d be easy for a movie like this to fall into cheap stereotype, because ultra-religious churches are intense and easily mockable; but the movie pretty much resists. The things that I thought were cheap mocking, Beth’s like, “No, that’s actually right, that’s just how they are.” And either way, it’s definitely not a secular-people-mocking-creepy-church-people thing. I could actually see a church being perfectly okay with this movie, and using it in a pro-faith way.
