Prey
So if you’re watching this movie, you’ve probably already seen at least Predator, and you get the gist of the premise: An advanced alien is coming to Earth to hunt the most dangerous game, and the protagonist needs to not die.
But so what this movie does is set us in the 18th century, in a Comanche tribe in I guess Alberta, based on end credit acknowledgements. (The movie features Native actors and is allegedly striving for authenticity despite the director being a white guy. I can’t speak to it firsthand, obviously, but it feels plausibly successful.) And it makes its protagonist a young woman, such that it functions as a coming of age story in addition to a Predator story.
It’s a very focused story; there’s not a lot of setup or extraneous material, it just gets right to the core of the hunt and then goes continually forward without ever stopping. What it actually reminds me of is one of those comic book issues that’s mostly silent panels, just telling this very straightforward story where like Wolverine fights a Wendigo or something.
This apparently went straight to Hulu with no theatrical release, but don’t let that fool you — this isn’t a direct-to-video mediocrity, it’s a real movie, delivering tight-focus relentless action with a distinctive atmosphere. Recommended.
